Smart Typewriter

After weeks of waiting the text message finally arrived. Time to pick up the parcel from America. All my worries vanished and I was filled with a sense of stillness.

The Smart Typewriter was neatly packed in a nice box. When unpacked, standing on the desk, it looked smart and reassuring.

The keyboard shortcuts are a bit tricky though - but I'm confident I'll be proficient in a few days' time.

Typing on a Freewrite feels amazing. No distractions - just pure writing. It's something I've been missing for a long time. You are the best Astrohaus!

I’ve been using a gen 2 model for a few years - was tempted to upgrade to gen 3 by the WASD editing - which is a game changer - but was disappointed that the 25% discount I got couldn’t be applied to the special editions (my old machine was a white gen 2)

I have recently upgraded to the Gen 3 Smart Typewriter after owning a Gen 1 - which unfortunately came to the end of its lifespan. In between owning the two, I have tried several methods to pick up my distraction-free writing again - from trying alternative tech, to writing long-hand with a quality journal and silky smooth fountain pens. Nothing beats sitting down with the Smart Typewriter at a desk (or indeed, your lap when you want to write in total comfort on the sofa) and letting the words out on the exceptional keyboard. The sweet sound of the keys just makes you want to type more. I just couldn’t recommend any other method of distraction-free writing.

“My typewriter was tap-tap-tapping its own impatience like a cow that hadn't been milked”. (From my father’s novel, about a music journalist in the 1980s.) That's the difference between a typewriter and a computer. This cow has been giving me milk every day since she came into my life.

My novel had been stagnating, now I'm overwhelmed with progress - even though I only have time to write in the evenings after my kids go to bed. I didn’t think I could write this much even with a lot more time to devote to it. Of course, it's not just the device, it's the philosophy of Freewrite, which is what got me interested in this wonderful tool for putting that philosophy into action.

It's also perfect for journalling. Writing out problems and sorrows is a long-time strategy of mine for taking care of my mental health, and the Freewrite makes it much more pleasurable and effective.

Between the progress on my novel and the solace of journalling, I am a happier person - sleeping less, since I’m up late writing, but with MORE energy, not less. In short, I am a much better version of myself!
