A great tool for getting in words "around the edges."

I normally dictate my stories (almost 100%) but have found a spot in my day where I cannot be productive, usually at night when I'm relaxing. I've always wanted to get in some "chill" work but my second laptop and lap desk is heavy, bright, and not conducive to night time production. With the Alpha, I'm able to sit comfortably with my spouse and cats piled around me and do four sprints per night, equalling about 800 - 1000 words. Over a period of a month, that's a lot of words! For a night light, I use an architect-style light clamped to the table next to me. I can draw it over the Alpha's screen and see what I'm typing easily on medium font.

It's really great to type on, and I've had no problems with the syncing so far. Great product for me.

Love it! Only regret is not getting it sooner

I've had my Alpha for 10 days and I am on a 10 day streak. The fact it keeps stats like these is one of the reasons why it's so motivating to write on it. I'm still learning how to manage my drafts etc but with almost 4000w written it's fair to say my only regret is not getting it any sooner.

Ich liebe es!

Durch das dreizeilige Display behält man den notwendigen Überblick und wird nicht von der Angst vor der leeren Seite blockiert. Die Cloudanbindung funktioniert super.

Finding my flow with my Alpha is changing my life

A hyperbolic title? It may seem so on the surface, however, it is not! Since getting my Alpha 10 days ago I have written nearly 14k words on a novel I’ve tried writing about 4 times before. The benefit of a distraction-free device that is meant for a single purpose can’t be overstated.

Writing 14k words in 10 days is not life changing, but the way my perspective is changing towards how I spend my time, and what I’ve allowed to steal my time, is. I’ve realized how much my phone sucks joy from my life and I’ve started to make efforts to change how I interact with my phone and the internet in general. I’m gaining hours back that I was unwittingly losing, and a couple of those hours are going to writing every day.

So, its stated purpose, to be a distraction free drafting device is absolutely accomplished.

Its function as a forward-writing device, which is difficult to edit on, is also achieved, and the clumsiness of moving around in my draft on the Alpha has just about exiled my inner editor, allowing me to literally write more freely. It’s -supposed- to be hard to maneuver in the draft, and it is if you’re trying to get into the nitty gritty of editing. If you just need to go back and remind yourself what you said last, it’s simple to page up and down to look at chunks of your writing.

The syncing is great, I can even hook it up to my phone’s hotspot so that I can keep my streak alive when not at home base, which every cool. Exporting to Google Docs couldn’t be easier, and from there you can edit to your heart’s content on a more traditional word processing device.

I have wrists prone to repetitive motion injuries, and typing is a culprit. This device has a very comfortable wrist support and the little kickstand does the trick. It is lightweight but feels sturdy, and the keyboard is extremely comfortable to type on. Be prepared for some clickety-clackety when you type, it’s a feature, not a bug, but I did feel a little bit noisy when I debuted my Alpha at writing club, but no one seemed bothered, it’s a very pleasant sound.

For me, it was well worth the cost to get something that is purpose-specific, feels good to type on, and does everything I need it to, and, more importantly, nothing that I don’t.

New updates make this a favorite so far

I really wanted to love the Alpha when I bought it some months ago, thinking maybe I could replace my Traveler. It starts up so fast and the fast refresh on the screen was great, but the text was hard to read even with a light, so I returned it. When I saw they had made significant updates and that there was a special sale I figured I’d give it another try. And I’m glad I did. I always felt the typing experience was great, almost on par with the Smart Typewriter. Something about the keys make it fun to type. Even with the limitations of not being able to switch folders like the other two devices, I can get past it with the ability push a button and have it turn on to type right away. This will probably replace my Traveler as my portable writing device while still using my Ink Smart Typewriter at home and to access other folders/documents with the option to use Freewrite Plus if I want to.

FAQ

FAQ

What is Alpha?

Alpha is a portable, distraction-free writing tool for serious and aspiring writers. It introduces a fast-refreshing LCD screen to the Freewrite lineup in a portable device that syncs to the cloud and provides an instant-on writing canvas.

If I already have a Freewrite device, should I get Alpha?

All Freewrite devices offer a distraction-free writing experience but cater to different needs. While Traveler is ideal for on-the-go writing with its compact design, and Smart Typewriter provides a tactile, traditional typing experience, both devices feature an E Ink screen. Alpha introduces an instant refresh LCD display paired with a quiet yet satisfying mechanical keyboard experience. Alpha is a great addition to your writing toolbox!

What type of screen does Alpha have?

Alpha has an instant refresh LCD display that shows 2-4 lines of text so you can stay focused. The screen is anti-glare, as well, and utilizes ambient light so that it can be used indoors or in direct light without getting washed out.

What type of keyboard does Alpha have?

Alpha’s keyboard features Kailh Choc V2 brown-style low-profile key switches for a quiet yet satisfying typing experience and reduced finger fatigue.

Does Alpha have arrow keys?

Yes. Alpha has WASD arrow keys to move within your drafts.

Can I move documents to my computer without the cloud?

Yes, absolutely and you can use Alpha entirely offline, if you'd like. Connect Alpha to your computer via the included USB-C. cable. When you do this, Alpha will appear as a USB Mass Storage Device, and you'll be able to move your drafts to your computer as you would with any other flash drive.

Is Alpha compatible with Freewrite Plus?
Unfortunately, Alpha is not compatible with any of the current features of Freewrite Plus. Adding Alpha compatibility is on our roadmap, but there is no timeline for its implementation.
