Chapter 1

Compose Your Own Adventure

"Hemingwrite" captures the vibrant spirit of its namesake and serves as a timeless companion for the most daring of writing adventures

An explorer at heart, Hemingway lived a rich, legendary life. He won a medal for his bravery in WWI, was adopted into the “Lost Generation” writers’ circle in Paris, ran with the bulls in Spain, and caught giant marlins off the coast of Cuba.

Beyond his worldly travels, Hemingway whet his appetite for adventure through the written word. On the Hemingwrite, the only limit to your exploration is your imagination.

Chapter 2

Embrace writing simply

When he needed distance from the demands of daily life, Hemingway famously spent his days writing in charming Parisian cafes.

Now, there’s no need to travel to Paris to create a distraction-free atmosphere. Hemingwrite is designed to help you focus, so you can enter writing flow wherever you go.

Hemingway wrote directly and concisely. His perceptive style became known as the “iceberg theory,” influencing subsequent generations of writers. The principle of minimalism is at the very core of Hemingwrite. Its clean aesthetic, minimalist features, and singular purpose as a drafting tool will help you do what you do best: just write.

Chapter 3

Write truly and prolifically

Hemingway became a decorated writer by constantly challenging himself to write more. When not hunting German U-Boats in the Caribbean or exploring Parisian streets, Hemingway dedicated himself to long drafting sessions that eventually produced classics of American literature.

To conquer the blank page, Hemingway advised writers to first “write the truest sentence that you know.” From that first sentence, the Hemingwrite encourages you to embrace authenticity by focusing on productivity over perfection – let your story emerge.

My new best friend

What a beautiful device! I’ve started my novel on this device as I use my traveler for songwriting and another book I’m writing. I love how easy it is to keep track of everything and transfer documents through post box for either device. The Hemingwrite is so beautiful and has a vintage modern look it inspires me to write every day for hours. I love the sound of the keyboard like a real old type writer but its functions are clearly modern ! Thanks for another outstanding tool for my writing!

A look at the Hemingwrite

The chrome aesthetic of the Hemingwrite is a sight to behold, giving it an industrial retro feel in keeping with its solid build. The brown switches on the mechanical keyboard are far more satisfying to type on than any modern laptop, making it a joy to use, with a satisfying noise as you type. Typing is noisier than a laptop keyboard but quieter than other switches (such as green or blue).
The backlit e-ink screen is much nicer than a normal lcd screen, though it comes at the cost of a much lower refresh rate that some might find distracting, though personally I am okay with this. The second console screen is a nice addition allowing you to see certain characteristics - I prefer to leave it on the word count and reading time.
Although it is more bulky than the Traveller it is still compact enough to type on your lap. Aside from the keyboard, operation is silent and it's default behavior is to remain on standby with the power switch providing an almost instant-on capability when in this state. The battery appears to last a long time, though have not used it long enough to give any figures.
The ease of use and speed that you can get typing (even if it's just quickly typing a sentence or two), makes it a more productive tool for those first drafts.
This freewrite is based on the third generation, so does have arrow keys that can be accessed with a combination key press, although not ideal this is a marked improvement over the first generation.
So far, I've written several essays for an upcoming book on this device and plan to use it to write the first draft of my second novel. The Hemingwrite is expensive so I can see people having some trepidation over purchasing it, but as a writing tool it is far superior to a laptop and I also much prefer it to the Traveller (though its smaller size can be an advantage).

Pickiest Review You'll Ever Read (Hemingway Model)

I've had the FreeWrite Hemingway (Smart Type Writer) for a week now, clocking in at over 10K words.

PRO:
- Clacky keyboard FOR THE WIN. It's excellent and provides your very own version of "noise." This is an excellent alternative for those who get distracted when writing with music.
- It's beautiful. If you love the antique LOOK of the Hemingway and find yourself using the "pretty tools" more often than the "boring tools." Buy it. This will add to the enjoyment of your writing (thus encouraging *more* writing). And it looks fantastic sitting out when not in use. It's not ugly like a laptop that should be put away.
- The FreeWrite does encourage word count. Being a single-use tool, I can't wait to sit down and hear the clackity-clacks. I love watching my word count rise on Postbox. The writing day streak also encourages me to pick up my Hemmie at least a little bit each day. And you better believe I'm motivated by one of the 100k-word pin.

CONS:
- For the price point, I found quality lacking, specifically in the briefcase that comes with the Hemingway. Loose threads in the stitching. Black smudge (I'm assuming from the aluminum) on the inner felt lining. The clasps don't flick up like in a regular briefcase but flop all over the place. Then, it takes the strength of an ox to try to unclasp when you're ready to open it. If I pay $1k for something, I expect it to be pristine. Who wouldn't?
- Bulky and a bit heavy. However, this is something I expected. I didn't get the little "Traveler" after all.

All in all, I don't regret the Hemingway. I plan on using it like crazy. I did buy the warranty because one person I asked said they got the "black screen of death" with the Hemingway specifically. That was one person out of about seven Hemingway owners, so you can decide.

I love this thing. I just wish the faults in the briefcase quality didn't offend me when I think of how much I spent.
